5 Travel Scams You Need to Know About

Traveling is one of the great joys of life. We all dream of some magical place or destination, visiting the sights and enjoying delicious food. Unfortunately, the world is also rife with scams. Recognizing and avoiding scams will help make your holiday a vacation to remember.

  1. Overcharging

When you are new to an area, it's best to pay for everything in advance. Don't let your common sense get away from you just because you're having a good time at the bar. Many places will start to overcharge you if they think they can get away with it. Exercise caution and always pay first.

  1. The Hostess Scam

There are bars in several cities that use the hostess scam. Don't be fooled; it can also be a host scam. Gender doesn't necessarily play into it. In this scam, you meet a nice young man or woman and think you've struck up a new friendship. They suggest going to a bar, and you agree. Once there, you'll find the drinks you buy, or the drinks you buy for your new friend, are offered at a wildly substantial markup you won't see until you receive the bill. You can also encounter this scam in clubs or bars that seem to have very few people there dancing. Be aware of your surroundings and don't go anywhere with anyone you don't know. Always pay first, so you know the price.

  1. Taxis

Unfortunately, taxi scams occur worldwide. Taxi drivers will often overcharge, turn off their meters, take a very roundabout way to your destination, and then cry foul if you complain about the price. In many places, taxi drivers prey on tourists being unfamiliar with the area and then take advantage of that ignorance.

  1. Giveaways

The man you met in the square seemed very nice, didn't he? He had a clipboard offering free drinks at one of the popular local bars. You only had to give him your ID to prove your age, and then you were able to drink to your heart's content! He just stole your identity. This scam frequently happens in cruise ports and preys on the passengers just coming off the ship. Be extremely cautious, and don't give out your information to anyone.

  1. Drugs

This is important advice no matter where you are in the world, but in an unfamiliar place, you really need to keep your wits about you. It only takes a moment for someone to slip something into your drink. This can happen to anyone regardless of gender. Please be vigilant!
