Arthur W. Butler Memorial Sanctuary

This New York sanctuary is located close to Mount Kisco and is defined by rugged forests, swamps, streams, and numerous hiking trails. The main climb begins off of Interstate 684 where you will find a hawk-watch that stands at about 750 feet, where enthusiasts gather to watch raptor migrations during Fall. However, the real treat is the trail that passes by the swampland where you will find strange looking mushrooms sprouting from the ground all around you.

Ward Pound Ridge Reservation

This Nature Preserve is located along 6 Reservation Road in Pound Ridge and is only open to the public between 9 am and 5 pm. Head over to the five-mile Star Loop, a well-maintained hiking trail, and enjoy overhead views of the Cross River Reservoir. Pass by the cave of the Leatherman, where wanderers would seek refuge in the 19th century as they wandered from farm to farm looking for work, food, or a barn for the night.

Westmoreland Sanctuary

This is yet another Westchester Nature Preserve located along Chesnut Ridge Road near Mount Kisco. The preserve is only open to the public between 8 am and 5 pm, so arrive early on the day of your hike. Get away from the hustle of the concrete jungle and enjoy pristine hiking trails surrounded by cascading streams, ponds, stone walls, and dense forests.

Mianus River Gorge Preserve

Visit the Mainus River Gorge Preserve along Mainus River Road in Bedford; this 775-acre preserve is open to the public every day between 8am and 5pm. There is a single nature trail here that only goes five miles, making it perfect for young children. As much as the trail may seem a little short for experienced hikers, it affords you the opportunity to see an old quartz quarry, cascades, and rare flowers like marigolds and red trillium.
