Winter Holiday Safety Tips

Festive celebrations, warm fireplaces, flickering Christmas lights, snowy weather, are all hallmarks of this holiday season. However, this season comes with its own hazards and potential for danger. In this article, our Westchester Limo Service hopes to educate you on the potential dangers associated with this holiday season and safety tips you can apply to ensure that your holidays go without a hitch.

Handling Fireplaces

Avoid burning gift wrapping cartons and boxes or any other type of packaging at the fireplace because they generate too much heat and burn too rapidly and such a fierce flame may send flying sparks onto something else in the house and spread even further. Additionally, don’t hang Christmas socks from the fireplace mantel when the fireplace is in use and always use a screen in front of the fireplace to prevent flying sparks from entering the room.

Christmas tree Safety

Even when you mount your Christmas tree in a stand full of water, it can only moisturize the tree for so long; remember the tree began dying the minute it was cut. The water in the stand will only slow done the process, but it cannot stop it, so when you’re finally done with your tree, remember to dispose of it in the proper manner. Do not dispose of the tree by burning it because the drying needles are extremely flammable and you wouldn’t want to set your compound ablaze now, would you?

Holiday Lights/Fires Safety

During this season, we will definitely light candles around the house to keep the holiday spirit burning, but you should always remember to be careful where you place the candles. Keep the candles away from decorations and any other flammable materials. other things that can burn. Also remember to extinguish the candles whenever you’re going out or stepping out; never leave a lit candle unattended.  Alternatively, consider using LED candles, which are energy efficient, produce very little heat, and are less likely to spark a fire. Remember, however, to use extension cords wisely; do not overload them, and do not connect two extension cords. Rather, find a single extension cord of sufficient length.

Watch Out for the Ice

Ice-related injuries are not uncommon during winter so watch out for icy sidewalks and pavements. Take your time on the road and walkways and even take two or more trips when carrying items e.g. groceries to the house; better safe than sorry. Also remember to take find footwear that has extra traction designed specifically for the winter season.
