Go Wild This Summer with Our Fantastic Summer Sport Suggestions

It’s pretty hard to decide which season is the most loved, but when it comes to outdoor activities, there’s no beating the warmth and energy that summer brings. Even if you’re not the most physically inclined person, summer sports and activities are still a great excuse to get outside and be active. There are tons of options to choose from and it can range from calming ones to intense, nerve-wracking ones. Sports are fun in any season, but don’t you just love indulging in it when the weather is a lot warmer?

Summer Water Sports

Well, you either love the water or you’re not into it at all. For those who enjoy the refreshing splash of H2O during the summer months, you’ve probably already got a few water sports in mind. Be it a solo sport or one that you want to enjoy with others, here are our top summer suggestions for you:

Swimming

Unless you’re afraid of getting into the water, swimming is one sport that’s definitely a summertime staple. Sure, you can always swim indoors, but wouldn’t you rather bask in the warm temperature outdoors? From lakes and rivers to the sea and bays, just take your pick of the many bodies of water available around you.

Suggestion: Coney Island Beach & Boardwalk, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach

Surfing

This sport isn’t for the faint-hearted, but you should always give it a go if it’s something you’ve always wanted to try. Before getting into the water though, just remember that wiping out at the beginning will be a common scene, so don’t get discouraged and just keep on at it.

Suggestion: Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk, Lido Beach, Lincoln Boulevard, National Boulevard

Windsurfing

Now, this is one sport that’s akin to sailing, but a lot more affordable. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll get to enjoy skimming over the waters with the wind in your hair. Possibility of falling into the water? Sure, it’s a water sport. Is it fun once you know how to do it? Definitely yes.

Suggestion: Rockaway Beach, Belmar

Kayaking

Looking for something a little slower paced? Well, kayaking might be the water sport you’re looking for them. The calmer the body of water you’re in (for example, a lake), the less likely you’ll be paddling furiously as the focus will be on steering instead.

Suggestion: South Beach, Grass River, Kunjamuk River, Black River Canyon

Land Sports

It doesn’t take long to name ten sports that take place on land, and you can probably keep going for a lot longer after that. What we’re trying to say here is that there’s more options than you’ll probably have time for, so we’ve listed down our top favorite outdoor summer land sports that you might want to play:

Baseball

If it’s been awhile since you last held a bat or pitched one on the field, this summer is your time to shine again. It’s definitely one of America’s favorite pastimes, so it shouldn’t be too hard to round up a couple of fans to start a game. Of course, if you’re entirely new to the game, you can always start off at the batting cages first.

Suggestion: Manhattan Beach, John V. Lindsay East River Park, The Great Lawn, Van Cortlandt Park

Handball

For a faster-paced sport, there’s always handball. This team game is fun, competitive and refreshing, so if that’s a combo you’re looking for, just give this Olympic entry a go with some friends.

Suggestion: Orchard Beach, Midland Beach, Manhattan Beach, John Jay Park

Soccer

Beloved all around the world, soccer (or in other countries, football) fans can be found just about everywhere, and the best thing about this sport is that you’ll only really need a ball and a big enough area to start playing.

Suggestion: Sara D. Roosevelt Park, Pier 40 at Hudson River Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park- Pier 5

Biking

This activity is a great way to feel the wind in your face and give your legs a workout. If you own a bike that’s sitting forlornly in the corner of your house, it’s time to take it out for some summertime biking. There’s plenty of trails to choose from, so it’s pretty much up to you to decide.

Suggestion: Central Park Full Loop, Roosevelt Island Greenway, Governors Island

Frisbee Golf

Yes, frisbee golf is definitely catching on, and it’s a sport that anyone can attempt. You’ll need just a couple of frisbees and patience to collect them back once you’ve thrown them out. In fact, most parks these days are incorporating frisbee golf courses for everyone to enjoy.

Suggestion: Wolf Hill Disc Golf Course, Heckscher Forest Disc Golf Course, Warwick Park Disc Golf Course

Rock Climbing

If you get a thrill from heights, this is one sport worth trying out. It does take some getting used to, so if you’re raring to go, you can start off at a safer location with man-made obstacles and walls instead. Once you’re confident, you can get out there and scale earth’s magnificent formations with all the rest.

Suggestion: Dumbo Boulders, The Shawangunks, Peterskill

Beach Volleyball

It really wouldn’t be summer without the scene of volleyball enthusiasts on the beach. It’s an easy sport to learn, and once you stop getting scared of the ball hurtling towards you, you’ll realize just how fun and addictive it can be.

Suggestion: Orchard Beach, Pier 25 at Hudson River Park, Coney Island Beach & Boardwalk

Golf

Before striking off this sport, just remember that you needn’t sign up for a golf membership to enjoy hitting a few rounds. In fact, if you just want to test it out, it’s a good idea to start at a driving range. Once you’ve enjoyed hitting a few rounds, you can then move on to considering playing on an actual golf course.

Suggestion: The Golf Club at Chelsea Piers, Douglaston Golf Course, Kissena Park Golf Course
